Members of the Town of Westport Fire Department are reminding residents to keep safety in mind while clearing snow following winter weather. Snow and ice can create hazards for both the public and emergency responders if proper precautions are not taken. Fire officials stress the importance of clearing fire hydrants near homes. A minimum of three feet of space around the hydrant and a clear path to the street help ensure firefighters can access water quickly during emergencies, when seconds matter. Residents using snowblowers are also urged to follow basic safety practices. Hands should never be placed inside the chute, and machines should be turned off before clearing jams. Snow can hide objects such as ice, rocks, or debris that may cause sudden issues during operation.
