The Closter Volunteer Fire Department recommended locals to take precautions to lower the risk of frozen and broken pipes due to the prolonged below-freezing conditions. If left untreated, cold weather can put additional strain on home plumbing and result in water damage.

According to fire experts, preventing freezing can be achieved by keeping a small flow of water running, opening cabinet doors to let warm air circulate, insulating exposed pipes, and maintaining constant heat throughout the house. Residents were instructed to open the affected faucet and gradually warm the pipe using safe techniques, such as a hair dryer or warm towels, starting close to the faucet and working back, if a pipe did freeze. n the event of a burst pipe, shutting off the main water supply and contacting a licensed plumber is recommended. If flooding creates a safety concern, residents were reminded to contact emergency services.
