January 22, 2026 — The Essex Fire Department has officially placed its newly upgraded Squad 2 into service, expanding the department’s ability to transport personnel and equipment during emergency responses.
The vehicle, a 2016 Ford F-350 pickup previously operated by the Department of Public Works, underwent significant modifications to enhance its operational capabilities. Upgrades included replacement of the utility body, installation of toolboxes, and the addition of emergency and scene lighting. A donated snowplow further strengthens the vehicle’s usefulness during winter operations.
Squad 2 will primarily function as a transport and support unit, allowing rapid deployment of firefighters and essential tools. Its four-wheel-drive capability improves access to remote and hard-to-reach areas, supporting responses to fires, medical emergencies, and rescue incidents.
The project was completed through strong community collaboration. Funding was provided by the Essex Fire Company, with major contributions from The Trailer Shop, which completed the modifications and donated labor and materials, K & D Signs and Lettering for vehicle graphics, and Tinkham Landscapes, which donated the snowplow.
The addition of Squad 2 represents a strategic enhancement to the department’s fleet, reinforcing readiness and improving service to residents and visitors.
