January 3, 2026 — The East Rutherford Fire Department (ERFD) responded to two unrelated incidents within the borough on Saturday, January 3, 2026, both of which were brought under control quickly with no reported injuries.
At approximately 8:35 a.m., ERFD units were dispatched to the area of Paterson Avenue and Humboldt Street following a report of a vehicle explosion. Upon arrival, firefighters determined that a pressure washer machine stored in the rear of a commercial van had malfunctioned, resulting in a minor explosion. The fire was already extinguished prior to fire department arrival. Crews conducted a thorough check for fire extension and confirmed no additional hazards were present.
Later that afternoon, at 2:49 p.m., ERFD was dispatched to Vesta Restaurant on Hoboken Road for a reported fire alarm activation. While responding, crews received updated information indicating smoke in the basement. Upon investigation, firefighters determined the smoke originated from a small exterior fire, which had been extinguished by restaurant staff before ERFD arrived. Firefighters again checked for extension, with negative results, and the incident was safely concluded.
Both responses highlight the importance of rapid reporting and proactive actions by civilians, which helped minimize damage and ensure public safety.
