January 9, 2026 — The Margate City Fire Department responded at approximately 9:20 a.m. to a high-pressure gas leak in the unit block of South Granville Avenue, prompting a large-scale safety operation and temporary evacuations. Upon arrival, firefighters assessed the situation and evacuated a one-block radius surrounding the leak, including businesses along Ventnor Avenue—such as Casel’s, Dino’s, Jagielky’s, and Talk of Towne—as well as nearby residential blocks on South Granville, South Gladstone, and South Haverford avenues. As a precaution, crews stretched a 2½-inch hose line and secured a water supply to Engine 22. South Jersey Gas Company arrived approximately 45 to 50 minutes into the incident to secure the leak, while firefighters remained on scene to address a secondary gas leak near Granville and Ventnor avenues. During the response, Ross School and Tighe School were contacted and advised to keep students indoors due to gas fumes throughout the city. A total of 11 firefighters operated on scene, with four off-duty personnel recalled to maintain citywide coverage. The department was assisted by the Margate City Police Department, Margate City Public Works, and South Jersey Gas. Fire officials later worked alongside gas company representatives to check affected properties and confirm no remaining hazards. All fire department units cleared the scene at approximately 11:40 a.m., noting the incident occurred during active roadwork on Granville Avenue and thanking the public for its cooperation during the disruption.
