Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, the Barbour Mansion, a forty two room, twelve fireplace home with a built in organ, was damaged in a two alarm fire on January 5th. The decades long vacant building that has been deteriorating along with the surrounding landscaping that covered over five acres at 855-889 Broadway.
Fire units were dispatched at about 8:15 PM and on arrival flames were visible on the second floor of the “B” wing and extending to the roof and attic. A second alarm was transmitted. A narrow driveway only allowed Ladder 3 and Engine 1 to enter the property. Condition of the structure and heavy fire through the roof had operations going defensive quickly. One elevated master stream, one deck gun, and multiple exterior hand lines were put into service.
Companies were able to keep the flames from extending to the main part of the building. By shortly after 10:00, the main body of fire was knocked down and members began overhaul. The cause was under investigation, but squatters and the homeless has been a common problem. The fate of the mansion continues to be unknown.
