Late Christmas Eve into the early hours of Christmas morning, the Martindale Volunteers responded to a reported chimney fire in the 300 block of Frysville Road in East Cocalico Township. Homeowners had started their wood stove and quickly noticed a strong odor of smoke on the first floor, prompting an immediate call to 911. Upon arrival, firefighters determined that creosote buildup inside the chimney had ignited. Crews safely cleaned the chimney flue, removed the burning creosote, and brought the incident under control. Cracks in the chimney allowed smoke and creosote to escape into unintended areas, requiring repairs before the wood stove can be used again. No structural damage was reported, and the home’s oil furnace remains operational as it vents through a separate chimney. The Martindale Volunteers were assisted on scene by Garden Spot Fire Company (Co. 39) and Ephrata Fire Company (Co. 15). The incident serves as an important reminder of the need for regular chimney inspection and maintenance to prevent dangerous conditions.
