EGG HARBOR TWP., NJ - At 7:33 a.m. on January 5th, the Cardiff Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1 and the Bargaintown Vol. Fire Co. were dispatched to a residence on West Kennedy Drive for a reported residential fire alarm activation. The alarm company advised that both a heat detector and hallway smoke alarm had activated, prompting a response that included patrol officers from the Egg Harbor Township Police Dept., who arrived to find light smoke coming from the unoccupied home.
Rescue 1517 from Cardiff responded with a crew, and Cardiff Assistant Chief Craig Thompson arrived on scene, assumed command, and declared a working fire. Mutual aid was requested from the Scullville Vol. Fire Co., the Atlantic City International Airport FD, and the Northfield City FD. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke from an attached garage, made entry, extinguished the fire, checked for extension, and ventilated the residence. The fire was investigated by the Egg Harbor Township fire investigator, with no injuries reported.
Firefighters were supported on scene by the Egg Harbor Township Rescue Squad and police. Damage was confined to the garage, credited to the early detection provided by the monitored fire alarm system.
