Overnight Phone Charging Raises Fire Risk, Fire Officials Warn

In order to lower the danger of household fires, particularly at night, the Berkeley Heights Fire Department is encouraging locals to adhere to safe charging procedures.
Fire authorities point out that although phone chargers left plugged in close to beds might seem innocuous, heat can accumulate due to faulty wires, subpar or unapproved adapters, inadequate ventilation, and contact with bedding. Overheating can happen without visible warning indications when chargers are covered by beds, pillows, or blankets.
Smoke and heat may grow silently before being noticed, which is why many home fires start while people are asleep. This risk is increased when gadgets are left unattended overnight. The department advises residents to avoid charging phones on beds or under pillows, use only certified charging equipment, and replace damaged cords immediately. Chargers should be unplugged when not in use, and devices should be placed on hard, open surfaces while charging.
Fire officials stress that small habits can make a significant difference in preventing nighttime fires and improving overall home safety.
