Vista Fire and EMS Personnel Conduct Bailout and Downed Firefighter Training

Fire and EMS personnel participated in separate but related training exercises focused on firefighter safety, emergency escape procedures, and medical care for injured firefighters.

The training was conducted on Monday, October 19, 2026, by the Vista Fire Department in Vista, New York. Firefighters practiced emergency bailout procedures, while EMS personnel reviewed treatment and removal procedures for a downed firefighter.

During the bailout exercise, interior firefighters reviewed the deployment and operation of their personal bailout systems before practicing emergency exits from an elevated position. The equipment provides an alternative escape route when deteriorating fire conditions prevent firefighters from using conventional exits. Vista requires interior firefighters to complete bailout training annually.

EMS personnel focused on assessing and treating injured or medically compromised firefighters. Training included rapid removal of protective gear and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), airway management, CPR, AED operations, patient packaging, and coordination of continued medical care.

The exercises emphasized coordination between fire and EMS personnel during firefighter emergencies. Fire crews practiced procedures for escaping hazardous conditions, while EMS members reviewed the specialized care required when a firefighter is injured or incapacitated.
