The Middlesex Hose Company is mourning the loss of longtime member Tom Mahaney, who served the department and its community for more than four decades. His service included fire company leadership, emergency medical response, fundraising, and mentoring younger firefighters.
Mahaney joined the company on July 11, 1984, in Middlesex, New York. During his 42 years of membership, he served two separate terms as assistant chief and also held positions as truck captain, trustee, and vice president from 1987 to 1988. He was also a certified first responder.
Mahaney helped establish the company's First Responder Program, contributing to the development of its emergency medical response capabilities. He also served on the building committee responsible for improvements to the firehouse, including converting the former two-bay engine room into a takeout area, creating an upstairs meeting room, and developing the kitchen.
His involvement extended to company fundraising, publicity, and community outreach. He assisted with turkey party fundraising events, developed advertising signs and tip can designs, and managed the Middlesex Hose Company Facebook page for many years. Through photographs, videos, and historical presentations, he documented the company's activities and preserved its history.
The department also recalled Mahaney's interest in a particular emergency response involving the rescue of a horse, which he considered his favorite call during his years of service.
Company members remembered Mahaney as a mentor who shared his experience with younger firefighters and encouraged their development. His contributions to the company's operations, facilities, and community relationships will remain part of its history.
The officers and members of Middlesex Hose Company extended their condolences to Mahaney's family and loved ones.
