Poughkeepsie, N.Y. — October 6 — The Arlington Fire District participated in Fire Prevention Week, which took place from October 4 to 10, alongside fire departments and communities nationwide. The event focused on promoting fire safety education and preventing home fires.
Throughout October, the district maintained its public education initiatives by visiting local schools and teaching students essential fire and life safety practices. These visits allowed children to recognize potential hazards, understand how to act during emergencies, and share safety information with their families.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that almost three out of every five home fire deaths happened in homes that lacked working smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms can lower the risk of death in a home fire by approximately 60%.Additionally, the NFPA notes that cooking is the primary cause of reported U.S. home fires between 2017 and 2021.
The Arlington Fire District's outreach efforts aimed to support the fire service’s mission of reducing preventable emergencies through public education. The district also urged residents to test smoke alarms monthly, ensure alarms are installed on every level of the home and inside sleeping areas, and create and practice a home fire escape plan.
These school visits provided firefighters with a chance to teach children valuable safety lessons that can be applied at home.
The district's activities also depended on collaboration with local schools, teachers, and families to reinforce fire prevention messages throughout the community.
