Franklin, N.Y. — October 10 — Franklin Fire & Rescue participated in an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) training session with members from the Franklin and Treadwell fire departments, led by John Gilmore of Sidney. The training emphasized the safe operation of emergency vehicles, which is essential for preparing firefighters and emergency medical personnel for emergency calls. Operators need to understand how to handle vehicles, assess road conditions, follow department procedures, and be aware of the responsibilities that come with driving emergency apparatus.
The joint training provided an opportunity for members from the participating departments to learn together and improve coordination between neighboring agencies.
Emergency vehicle operators must make careful decisions during responses, ensuring they balance the need to reach incidents with the safety of their crew, other drivers, and pedestrians.
New York State’s Office of Fire Prevention and Control provides an Apparatus Operator – Emergency Vehicle Operation course that covers the duties and risks of operating emergency vehicles. The course focuses on safe driving practices and the legal and professional obligations of emergency vehicle operators.
The session also contributed to ongoing training efforts within local fire departments, where regular instruction helps members keep their skills sharp and review department procedures.
Franklin Fire & Rescue, based at 351 Main Street in Franklin, continued its training initiatives alongside neighboring departments. The joint session underscored the importance of shared instruction and cooperation in preparing emergency responders for their responsibilities.
