Delhi, N.Y. — October 8 — The Delhi Fire Department visited Delaware Academy Elementary School during Fire Prevention Week, providing students with a chance to learn about fire safety and the role of local emergency responders.
Members of the department showcased various emergency vehicles, such as an engine, ladder truck, utility vehicle, and ambulance. This visit allowed students to become more familiar with the equipment and tools that firefighters and emergency medical services personnel use during emergencies.
Firefighters shared information about basic fire safety, explained their responsibilities, and described what children might observe when emergency crews arrive at a scene. The session also helped students understand the protective clothing and gear that firefighters wear while responding to incidents.
One of the standout moments was when a firefighter climbed to the top of the department’s ladder truck, giving students a closer view of the apparatus and its functions.
School visits offer fire departments a valuable opportunity to teach children important safety skills before emergencies occur.
Key lessons include identifying smoke alarms, knowing two safe exits from a home, staying low in smoky conditions, and recognizing an outdoor meeting spot.Firefighters also encourage families to practice home escape plans together.
Delaware Academy Elementary School serves students from prekindergarten through fifth grade within the Delaware Academy Central School District in Delhi. The visit supported the department’s community outreach initiatives and strengthened the relationships between emergency responders, students, and school staff.
The Delhi Fire Department expressed gratitude to the school staff and students for participating in the Fire Prevention Week program.
