Homer, N.Y. — October 19 — The Homer Fire Department started its Fall Fire School on Monday, October 19, with training sessions centered on ground ladders and search and rescue techniques.

The first part of the training focused on two key aspects of firefighting. Ground ladders are essential for firefighters to reach upper floors, rooftops, and windows, and they also help in rescuing people from buildings when regular exits are not available.

Correct placement of ladders, stable footing, and safe climbing techniques are crucial during these operations. Firefighters also need to know how to set up ladders for various tasks and identify potential dangers before beginning their work.

Search and rescue training enables crews to practice methods for finding individuals inside buildings and safely evacuating them. These operations demand clear communication, teamwork, and an awareness of building conditions. Firefighters must collaborate effectively while adhering to safety protocols.

The Fall Fire School offered firefighters a chance to revisit essential skills and enhance their preparedness for emergency responses. Routine training allows them to practice procedures in a controlled environment before handling real-life incidents.

Training in ground ladders and search techniques is vital for both rescuing civilians and ensuring firefighter safety.

Guidelines from Ontario’s Ministry of Labour emphasize that ladder exercises should gradually increase in difficulty while implementing measures to minimize the risk of injuries.

The Homer Fire Department, based at 45 South Main Street, continued its training program with the aim of maintaining proficiency in operational skills and equipping members to handle various emergency scenarios.
