Homer, N.Y. — October 12 — The Homer Fire Department visited Homer Elementary School to provide students with essential fire prevention education, emphasizing the importance of smoke alarms, home escape plans, and firefighter safety.
During their visit, the firefighters explained the importance of having working smoke alarms installed inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Students also learned how keeping bedroom doors closed while sleeping can help slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire in an emergency.
The department encouraged families to practice home evacuation drills so children would know how to safely exit their homes.
Firefighters highlighted the need to identify escape routes and select a specific outdoor meeting place for family members to reunite after leaving the building.
Firefighters also demonstrated what a firefighter might look and sound like while wearing protective gear and assisting a child during an emergency. This demonstration helped students understand that firefighters may look unfamiliar due to masks, helmets, and other equipment, even though they are there to help.
The visit supported the department's community education initiatives by helping children become more familiar with emergency responders and learn basic fire safety practices.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, working smoke alarms, closed bedroom doors, and practiced escape plans are key elements of home fire safety. The Homer Fire Department continues to promote these lessons through its school outreach program.
