Niverville, N.Y. — October 16 — The Niverville Fire Department Inc.joined the Valatie Fire Department and Kinderhook Fire Company, also known as Palmer Engine and Hose Company No.1, for Fire Prevention Day at Ichabod Crane Primary School on Friday.

The annual event brought together firefighters and students for fire safety lessons, demonstrations, and activities aimed at helping children learn how to respond during an emergency.

One instructor demonstrated the “stop, drop, and roll” procedure using a marshmallow, which helped capture the students’ attention. A parent later reached out to the department after their child came home asking to make s’mores, showing how the lesson had a lasting impact on the student.

Fire Prevention Day also allowed students to interact with local emergency responders and gain a better understanding of the firefighters’ roles and responsibilities. The three departments have been working together to provide school-based outreach programs that educate young children on fire safety and emergency preparedness.

The lessons often include staying calm, calling 911 when help is needed, recognizing smoke alarms, and knowing how to safely exit a building. Firefighters also encourage families to practice home escape plans together.

The Niverville Fire Department and its partner agencies continued their community education efforts through the school visit, helping students learn important safety practices in an engaging and interactive way. The departments expressed gratitude to the school staff and looked forward to participating in the next annual event.
