West Chazy, N.Y. — October 9 — The West Chazy Volunteer Fire Department participated in a Fire Prevention Week event last Friday at Beekmantown Elementary School, along with the Beekmantown, Plattsburgh District 3, and Cumberland Head volunteer fire departments.

During the program, the fire departments introduced students to emergency response equipment and explained the importance of knowing when and how to contact emergency services by calling 911. Members from the West Chazy department showcased EMS 333, allowing students to see firsthand the tools used by emergency medical personnel.

This visit offered students a chance to learn about the roles and responsibilities of local firefighters and emergency medical service providers. Firefighters also shared tips on how children can assist during an emergency by providing clear and accurate information to 911 dispatchers, including their location and the nature of the problem.

Students showed great interest in the equipment on display, with several items allowing them to participate actively in the educational experience. These activities helped familiarize young learners with emergency services and reinforced essential safety lessons.

Fire Prevention Week provides a valuable opportunity for fire departments to share information with families and schools about fire safety and emergency preparedness. For children, these lessons often include identifying smoke alarms, knowing two safe exit routes from a home, and practicing escape plans with family members.

The West Chazy Volunteer Fire Department, located at 7656 State Route 22, continued its efforts to educate the community by working with neighboring agencies. This collaboration helped promote emergency awareness and build stronger connections between first responders, students, and school staff.
