Guilford, N.Y. — October 2 — The Guilford New York Fire Department and EMS Squad welcomed students from Guilford Elementary School for a fire prevention visit aimed at increasing fire safety awareness among young students.
This school visit allowed the children to learn more about fire prevention and the important work done by local emergency responders. Conducting outreach at schools helps firefighters teach safety lessons in a familiar environment and helps children learn how to respond during an emergency.
Important fire safety topics for elementary students include identifying smoke alarms, understanding the importance of staying low when there is smoke, recognizing safe exits, and knowing how to call 911 when help is needed. Firefighters also encourage families to create and practice a home escape plan with at least two escape routes from each room whenever possible.
The department's visit supports its larger role in community education and emergency preparedness. Public education helps connect emergency service personnel with residents before an incident occurs and provides children with useful information they can share with their families.
The Guilford Fire District functions as a volunteer fire department that serves the local community. Its public information resources also emphasize fire prevention and community safety education as vital components of its work.
School visits continue to be an effective way for fire departments to build relationships with students while reinforcing everyday habits that can lower fire risks and enhance emergency preparedness.
