Afton, N.Y. — October 19 — The Afton Fire Department held bailout training on Monday night, October 19, allowing firefighters to practice emergency escape techniques that are used during structural fire operations.
The training involved a hands-on exercise where firefighters focused on using personal bailout systems to exit an elevated position when a normal escape route is not available. Members practiced climbing down the outside of a training structure through an upper-floor window while attached to a rope system.
Bailout systems offer firefighters an alternative way to escape when fire conditions or other dangers prevent them from using stairs or standard exits. Regular training helps firefighters become familiar with their equipment and the correct steps for deploying it. Similar training programs at other fire departments include equipment checks, system deployment, and practical exercises from elevated positions.
The exercise enabled Afton firefighters to practice rope handling, equipment use, and controlled movement while descending the structure. These skills require consistent practice so that firefighters can better understand their equipment and respond effectively if an emergency escape becomes necessary during an incident.
Bailout training remains a key element of firefighter safety, especially for interior crews working at elevated levels.
Ongoing hands-on drills help reinforce safe procedures and build familiarity with emergency escape equipment before firefighters might need to use it in a real emergency.
The Afton Fire Department is based at 15 Spring St. in Afton, New York, and operates as a volunteer fire department serving the local community.
