Washington, NY - Volunteer firefighters from the Township of Washington Fire Department traveled to the Bergen County Fire Academy on Monday night, conducting an intensive hands-on drill centered around aggressive interior fire attack and hose management.
The practical evolution, held on the evening of Monday, October 19, 2026, at the county's Law & Public Safety Institute, immersed department crews in realistic fireground simulations designed to stress operational speed and physical technique.
Participating firefighters focused on the fundamental building blocks of engine company operations, executing rapid water supply connections from hydrants before advancing charged attack lines into simulated structural environments.
Under controlled fireground conditions, crews practiced navigating tight interior stairwells and hallways, coordinating nozzle mechanics, and effectively managing heavy friction loss and hose weight while maneuvering under live suppression scenarios.
Firefighters also worked on maintaining cohesive line discipline to prevent kinks, optimize gallons-per-minute delivery, and coordinate attack speeds with exterior command.
Department leadership noted that recurring evolutions at specialized regional burn facilities allow members to refine mechanical muscle memory and communication protocols outside the distraction of an uncontrolled incident, ensuring local personnel remain sharp, confident, and prepared for high-consequence structure fires.
