Clifton Warehouse Third Alarm

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

At 2:30 PM on October 15th, Clifton fire units were dispatched to 244 Hazel St. for a report of smoke coming from a 65' x 115', three-story, mostly vacant mill structure that was attached to several similar structures. Smoke was showing from the second floor, and a second alarm was transmitted.

Companies advanced into the building and located fire in a staircase on the “C” side of the structure. Flames were on the second floor and extending up to the third floor and rafters. Several lines were put into operation on the third floor, and the roof was vented. Flames were being held to the center portion of the structure, occasionally showing from the eaves, with minor venting through the roof. Fire walls appeared to be holding. Ladders were prepared for elevated streams if necessary.

A third alarm was transmitted as companies continued to open up. The smoke condition slowly eased, and the fire was placed PWH before 4:30 PM. Fire damage was confined to the center portion of the building. No injuries were reported, and the cause remains under investigation. Paterson, Passaic, Montclair, Nutley, Elmwood Park, and Woodland Park assisted at the scene.
