Colrain Crews Trained on Ladder Bail and Carry Techniques

Colrain, MA — September 15 — Colrain firefighters carried out a rapid intervention team training session that focused on ladder carries and ladder bails. The exercise allowed team members to practice techniques used when it is necessary to move a firefighter or a victim from a building using an external ladder.

A number of younger firefighters also took part in the training, gaining an understanding of the fundamental steps involved in conducting a ladder rescue.

The drill included instruction on safely placing a firefighter or a victim on a ladder, correct hand placement, and how to help someone while descending the ladder from the outside.

Members also practiced ladder bail techniques, which offer an emergency way for firefighters to exit a structure through a window if conditions inside make it difficult to leave normally.

Training on these movements helps crews get comfortable with the equipment, positioning, and communication needed before such situations arise during an actual emergency.

Rapid intervention teams are responsible for helping firefighters who become lost, trapped, injured, or unable to exit a structure by themselves.

Regular practical training ensures that team members stay skilled and prepared for these situations.

The Colrain Firefighters' Association, based at 51 Main Road, continues to use hands-on drills to ready its members for emergency responses.

Including junior firefighters in these supervised sessions also gives them an early exposure to essential rescue procedures and safe ladder operations.
