Hands-On Rescue: Willowvale Fire Drills on Cribbing, Stabilization, and Glass Management

Willowvale, NY - Firefighters with the Willowvale Fire Company took to the training grounds Monday evening to run hands-on drills on motor vehicle stabilization, glass management, and structural crash assessment in Oneida County.

On the night of August 31, company members gathered for Part One of an intensive auto extrication series led by the department's Assistant Chief. The drill focused on the foundational mechanical steps required at severe collision scenes before heavy hydraulic cutting tools are deployed.

Crews practiced step-chocking, box cribbing, and mechanical strut placement to eliminate unwanted suspension travel and shift, ensuring unstable vehicles remain completely stationary while first responders gain entry to treat trapped patients.

Firefighters also reviewed advanced glass management protocols, distinguishing between tempered side glass and laminated safety glass to deploy the correct breaking and cutting tools while mitigating airborne particulate hazards.

Instruction also covered modern vehicle construction, identifying high-strength steel reinforcement zones, supplemental restraint system (SRS) inflators, and optimal structural cut points to ensure safe and efficient patient disentanglement.

Every attending member rotated through hands-on practical stations to operate the stabilization equipment directly.

Department leadership highlighted that while structural fire suppression remains a core mission, complex highway collisions require equally rigorous, muscle-memory training to execute safely in the field.
