ALTON, NH — August 26, 2026 — Following their successful completion of paramedic training via the New England EMS Institute (NEEMSI), Alton Fire-Rescue is honoring Captain Pat O'Brien and Firefighter Trevor Smith.

Both members continued to work for Alton Fire-Rescue while completing the advanced coursework and training necessary to become paramedics.

The department claims that the curriculum includes in-depth classroom instruction, clinical training, fieldwork, and the development of practical skills. The current paramedic curriculum offered by NEEMSI consists of classroom education, hands-on laboratory work, hospital clinical practice, and field EMS training. The curriculum is intended to provide students with advanced prehospital patient care skills.

O’Brien received the Clinical Excellence Award, while Smith received Academic and Leadership awards for their performance during the program, according to Alton Fire-Rescue.

NEEMSI identifies paramedic as the highest level of prehospital care and states that its program is approved by the New Hampshire EMS office and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

The department said the members dedicated significant time to their education while continuing to serve the Alton community. Their additional training expands the department's ability to provide advanced emergency medical care to residents and visitors.

The accomplishment also represents continued professional development for both members as they add advanced EMS education to their fire-service responsibilities. Alton Fire-Rescue congratulated Captain O’Brien and Firefighter Smith on completing the program and recognized their work and achievements throughout their paramedic education.
