AMHERST, MA — SEPTEMBER 7, 2026 — In the last week of August, the Amherst Fire Department finished training student firemen from Amherst College and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Alongside the student force, probationary department members had the chance to develop their fireground skills throughout the training.

Every year, the department held "Wonder Week," which included live-fire training as well as instruction in fundamental firefighting and search and rescue techniques. Throughout the academic year, Amherst's Student Force assisted fire and emergency medical services while operating as a separate engine company. Students from UMass Amherst, Amherst College, and Hampshire College participated in the program, which has been serving the area since 1953.

Career firefighters provided instruction, helping prepare members for operational assignments and continued training. State Representative Mindy Domb also visited a vehicle-fire evolution during the training week and continued her support of the program.

The training strengthened readiness as students and probationary firefighters prepared for the academic year.
