Greenfield, MA - Working smoke detectors provided crucial early warning Monday afternoon, allowing residents to safely escape their Lincoln Street home as firefighters contained a fast-moving kitchen appliance fire before it could spread through the structure.

Emergency dispatchers received a 911 call reporting an active appliance fire during the mid-afternoon hours on Monday, September 28, 2026, sending Greenfield fire units directly to the residential address. First-due command in Car 4 reported heavy smoke billowing from the rear of the residence and transmitted a working fire confirmation.

Engine 3 and Ladder 1 established a sustained water supply, deploying a primary handline directly into the rear while advancing a second backup hose line through the front entry.

Crews encountered an active fire located in the kitchen area, executing a fast knockdown on the main body of fire before initiating extensive overhaul. Off-duty Greenfield firefighters were recalled to staff additional apparatus and provide supplementary fireground manpower.

Operating under the command of Chief Strahan and Deputy Chief McIver, crews leveraged their knowledge of building construction and thermal travel paths to thoroughly open and inspect concealed void spaces, verifying no hidden fire had extended deeper into the Franklin County residence.

Greenfield Police managed road closures around Lincoln Street to secure the perimeter, while mutual aid partners, Greenfield Dispatch, and Shelburne Control coordinated regional coverage and emergency communications throughout the incident.
