Greenfield, MA -A stubborn structure fire in Montague Center prompted a coordinated multi-agency response Tuesday afternoon, with mutual aid assignments shifting rapidly from station coverage to interior fireground operations.

Greenfield firefighters were originally dispatched to provide station coverage for the Turners Falls Fire Department on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 22, 2026, after local units responded to initial reports of smoke issuing from a building in Montague Center.

As conditions on the scene escalated, Greenfield’s Engine 3 and its crew were quickly redirected to the active fireground, integrating with first-due personnel from the Montague Center Fire Department and several surrounding mutual aid agencies.

Crews confronted significant operational challenges inside the building, navigating unfamiliar interior layouts, complex construction characteristics, and concealed fire pockets that made suppression demanding and labor-intensive.

To maintain baseline emergency protection across Franklin County while front-line companies were committed to the fireground, a web of regional mutual aid apparatus backfilled the area.

The Bernardston Fire Department dispatched an engine to assist with ongoing operations, while the Brattleboro Fire Department mobilized an engine company across state lines from Vermont to cover local districts during the later stages of the incident.
