Dartmouth, MA - Members of Dartmouth Fire District 2 joined firefighters and public safety personnel from across New England for specialized aircraft accident response training at Plymouth Municipal Airport.

The training focused on preparing first responders for the unique challenges associated with aircraft emergencies, including safe access to damaged aircraft, passenger extrication and emergency medical operations. The program was presented by the Federal Aviation Administration’s FAASTeam and featured practical, hands-on exercises.

On August 13, 2026, Lt. Silas Costa, Firefighter/EMT Carolyn Abrantes and Firefighter/EMT Nathan Dufault participated in the training alongside other regional fire departments and public safety agencies.

During the course, participants practiced aircraft extrication, shoring and stabilization, while also learning procedures for safe aircraft access, emergency egress and aircraft shutdown. Responders were also introduced to aviation-specific safety considerations that can be critical when working around damaged aircraft.

The training concluded with a full-scale aircraft emergency exercise, giving participants the opportunity to put their skills into practice in a realistic scenario. The exercise incorporated rescue operations, patient access, treatment and emergency medical care, allowing crews to experience the coordination required during a complex aviation incident.

Training for low-frequency, high-risk emergencies is essential for first responders, as aircraft incidents can present hazards and operational challenges that differ significantly from routine emergency calls. Exercises like this also help strengthen coordination between fire departments, emergency medical personnel, aviation professionals and other public safety agencies.
