SPRINGVILLE, NY — August 17 — Members of the Springville Volunteer Fire Department spent the evening participating in training at the SYI Community Park & Pool, with a focus on water rescue techniques and the safe removal of patients from the water.
The training took place at the Springville Community Pool and involved instruction from pool lifeguards affiliated with Springville Youth Incorporated. Firefighters engaged in various rescue scenarios in both shallow and deep water, using patients of different sizes and age groups.
The scenarios involved cases of suspected spinal injuries and non-spinal injuries.
Firefighters practiced safely securing patients and removing them from the water while minimizing any unnecessary movement.
The training also covered the use of a backboard in the water, highlighting how its natural buoyancy can help crews during patient securing. Members also practiced controlled water entry when a spinal injury was suspected, focusing on a calm approach to minimize patient movement.
For emergency service personnel, pool-based training offered a controlled setting to practice techniques that may be required during water-related emergencies.
The session also provided firefighters with the chance to collaborate with lifeguards, enhancing coordination between emergency responders and aquatic staff.
