Two members of the Lakeview Fire Department's fire service family, former Chief Robert J. DeAngelis, Jr. and former Chief Victor A. Cantelmo, III, are being honored. Their lives were linked to the September 11, 2001 attacks and their long-lasting effects.

DeAngelis was a former chief of the Lakeview Fire Department and a veteran volunteer fireman. He was a firefighter with the Lakeview Fire Department who perished in the September 11 World Trade Center tragedy, according to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. His age was forty-seven.

According to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, DeAngelis was also serving as a fire commissioner for the West Hempstead Fire District and as a public fire-safety instructor with the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office. On September 11, 2001, he was working at the World Trade Center and helped evacuate coworkers before returning to his office, where he ultimately perished.

Cantelmo was also a firefighter and 9/11 first responder associated with the Lakeview community. His death came years after the attacks as a result of World Trade Center-related illness. The FDNY officially lists Firefighter Victor A. Cantelmo of Engine Company 236 as having died on February 20, 2023.

The Town of Hempstead has also recognized Cantelmo as an FDNY firefighter, 9/11 first responder and Lakeview resident.

The Lakeview Fire Department is inviting members of the community to join in remembering both men and honoring their commitment to the fire service.

Their names remain part of the department's history and the broader legacy of those affected by the September 11 attacks and the illnesses that followed.
