ELMA, NY — August 25 — Members of the Elma Volunteer Fire Company participated in a continuing medical education training session on Tuesday, August 25, by conducting a water-rescue exercise at Elma Village Green Park in Buffalo Creek.

The training scenario simulated a swimming accident involving a patient who had suffered spinal injuries.

Firefighters worked in the creek to evaluate, stabilize, and transport the simulated patient, while also practicing teamwork and coordination in a water environment.

According to the department’s training description, firefighters used a Kawasaki ATV and various rescue equipment during the exercise.

The purpose of the training was to provide emergency medical services personnel with practice on a type of call that is not frequently encountered but still requires specific skills and effective scene management.

The Town of Elma lists the Elma Volunteer Fire Company at 2945 Bowen Road and identifies it as a town fire company.

New York State EMS records classify the Elma Volunteer Fire Company as a certified ambulance service.

Village Green Park is situated along Buffalo Creek and features walking trails and other public amenities.

The Elma Historical Society notes that Buffalo Creek, also referred to as Big Buffalo Creek on historical maps, was involved in the region’s early mill operations.

For emergency service personnel, the drill emphasized the importance of practicing patient access, stabilization, and movement before these skills are required during a real water rescue situation.
