MIDDLEPORT, NY — August 29 — The Middleport Fire Department organized a regional tanker drill that involved 12 local fire departments to conduct hands-on water-supply training.

Over 75,000 gallons of water were transported by tankers during the exercise, allowing crews to practice water shuttle operations, tanker positioning, communication, and coordination between departments.

Middleport Fire Department acted as the host and first department to participate in the drill.

The participating departments were Akron, Barker, East Shelby, Gasport, Hartland, Rapids, Ridgeway, Shelby, South Lockport, Terry's Corners, Wendelville, and Wolcottsville.

Tanker operations are essential in rural and suburban areas where hydrants are not available or cannot supply the necessary water flow for an incident.

A coordinated shuttle system can transport water from a fill site to an emergency scene, enabling attack crews to maintain a consistent water supply.

The drill also allowed operators to work alongside firefighters from neighboring departments, preparing them for potential collaboration during real emergencies.

Middleport Fire Department is located at 28 Main Street in Middleport and is listed in the New York State fire department directory.

The August 29 exercise provided a hands-on opportunity for crews to reinforce tanker operations, build relationships with mutual-aid partners, and ensure water-supply skills remain sharp for future calls.
