WESTFIELD, NJ — August 13, 2026 — Anthony "Tony" Mazza, a former firefighter and lifelong Westfield resident, passed away on Saturday, August 8, at the age of 92. The Westfield Fire Department is in sorrow.

According to the agency, Mazza worked for the Westfield Fire agency from April 1, 1960, to June 1, 1970, when he was forced to retire at the age of 36 due to a line-of-duty injury.

Although he only worked as a firefighter for ten years, his ties to the department and the Westfield neighborhood persisted for many years after he retired.

Mazza was a lifelong Westfield resident and was remembered by the department for his service, friendly personality and commitment to his family. His obituary also describes him as someone who enjoyed working around his home, gardening, visiting a local diner and helping others with his ability to build and repair things.

He also had a long-standing connection to Westfield's fire-service history. A published history of the Westfield Fire Department identifies Anthony Mazza as a member of the Westfield Exempt Firemen's Association, an organization representing former members of the department.

Mazza's line-of-duty injuries caused his service to stop early, but his legacy in the department's history endured. The department's homage honored the decades he spent as a member of the Westfield community as well as the sacrifice that terminated his active career.

Mazza spent a significant portion of his time with his family outside of the fire department. According to his obituary, he raised three children with his wife, Catherine, over their nearly 59-year marriage. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren survive him.

He was also well-known for his ornate displays and holiday decorations, which were acknowledged by the local media on multiple occasions and turned into a custom for local families.
