HOPATCONG, NJ — August 1, 2026 — The Hopatcong Fire Department is paying tribute to former Mayor Michael Lawrence Francis, who passed away on Friday, July 31, after a career of community and public service.

The department acknowledged Francis' years of service to the Boro of Hopatcong and offered its condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones.

Before taking office as mayor in 2016, Francis was a member of the Hopatcong Boro Council. He served as mayor until 2023. His efforts in the area were also acknowledged by the New Jersey Highlands Council, of which he was a member for 16 years before to his retirement in December 2025.

During his time on the Highlands Council, Francis was described as an advocate for the agricultural community and for the protection of Lake Hopatcong, much of whose western shore is located within the borough.

Francis' public service extended beyond elected office. His obituary states that he served for seven years as a special officer with the Passaic Township Police Department. His professional career included 34 years with AT&T Bell Laboratories, followed by nine years with Lucent Technologies.

For emergency-service organizations, community leaders often play an important role in supporting public safety, municipal services and the organizations that protect local residents. The Hopatcong Fire Department's August 1 message recognized Francis for that broader commitment to the borough.

Francis was 82 years old. His obituary describes a life centered on family, professional achievement and public service.
