WHITING, NJ — Aug. 20 — Whiting Fire Company Station 33 concluded its summer fire-safety outreach initiative after hosting its sixth and last group from the YMCA summer camp at the firehouse.

Throughout the summer, around 250 campers from the YMCA program visited Station 33.

These visits allowed children to learn about fire safety and gain a better understanding of the people, equipment, and teamwork involved in emergency response.

Firefighters prepared each group with engaging, hands-on activities meant to keep the campers interested and involved.

The program also provided younger members of the company with the chance to act as mentors and help teach the next generation about the fire service.

The lessons extended beyond just fire prevention.

Campers were given a closer look at the importance of serving the community, working as a team, and responding when others needed assistance.

Community education has always been a key part of fire-service work.

Whiting firefighters previously visited Whiting Elementary School to teach students about fire safety and emergency preparedness.

Station 33 had also taken part in larger community fire-prevention efforts, including school and neighborhood outreach during Fire Prevention Week.

These programs demonstrated how firefighters could educate the public before an emergency occurred.

For emergency-service workers, events like the YMCA visits were a way to build stronger connections with the community.

Children who became familiar with firefighters, fire vehicles, and emergency tools might feel more at ease seeking help in a real emergency.

The summer program also helped junior members of the fire company improve their communication and leadership skills by working with younger campers.

These experiences could help build confidence in members as they move into more significant roles within the fire service.

Whiting Fire Company Station 33 was one of three volunteer fire companies serving Manchester Township.

The township recognized Whiting Fire Company, Manchester Fire Company, and Ridgeway Fire Company as its volunteer fire departments.

Station 33 operated from 120 Lacey Road in Whiting, New Jersey, and the Ocean County Fire Academy listed Whiting Fire Company as Station 33.

The final YMCA visit signaled the end of the summer program, but the message stayed the same: fire safety education begins well before an emergency happens.
