SECAUCUS, NJ — August 16, 2026 — Ex-Chief George H. Heflich Sr., a longstanding member of the Secaucus Fire Department, was honored Sunday with the Firefighter of the Year Award by the Secaucus Knights of Columbus.

According to the Secaucus Fire Department, Heflich was surprised by the award and had no idea he was being recognized.

Heflich has been with the Secaucus Fire Department for more than six decades. The New Jersey State Firemen's Association lists him as a member of the Washington Hook & Ladder Company since 1964. He eventually became Secaucus' fire chief in 1985 and 1986.

His service extended well beyond the local department. Heflich served with the New Jersey State Firemen's Association in several leadership positions before becoming president from 2007 through 2016. The association has also recognized him for more than three decades of service in its executive and state officer positions.

The Secaucus Fire Department currently lists Heflich as a life member and an ex-chief of Engine 4/Ladder 1, based at the department's County Avenue station. The company operates Engine 4, Ladder 1 and additional specialty resources.

According to the department's announcement, Heflich continues to remain active with the department, including responding to calls and operating Engine 4. That level of continued involvement was a central part of the recognition.

His influence has also reached beyond the firehouse. Heflich has remained involved with state volunteer-fire organizations and currently serves as a trustee and director of the New Jersey State Volunteer Firemen's Association.
