The 2024 Columbia County Volunteer Firefighters Association has proudly presented its Lifetime Firefighter Achievement Award to Chief Gary "Mazz" Mazzacano Sr., recognizing his outstanding contributions and unwavering dedication to the fire service and his community.

Chief Mazzacano, affectionately known as "Mazz," has been a stalwart of the fire service since June 6, 1968, when he joined the Becraft Pumper Co. 2 of the Greenport Fire District. Over the past five decades, his service has been marked by leadership, commitment, and a deep-seated love for the volunteer fire service.

Mazz's journey in leadership began in 1993 when he became an Assistant Fire Chief, and in 1997, he was elected Chief of the Department, a position he held for an impressive 21 years. His impact extends beyond his department, serving as an integral part of the Columbia County Fire Advisory Board, where he currently holds the position of Chairman.

Throughout his career, Mazz has been more than just a leader; he has been a mentor, a role model, and a friend to many. His influence reached far beyond the fire service. As a New York State Trooper and Investigator for over 30 years, he tirelessly promoted the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and volunteer fire and EMS agencies. Mazz was a relentless advocate for building strong relationships between these critical services, ensuring new troopers and investigators understood the vital role of volunteers in the community.

Mazz's dedication to the fire service is unparalleled, with a body of work that speaks volumes about his commitment and tireless efforts. He has always let his actions be the measure of his accomplishments, and those actions have set a high standard for others to follow. His service is a testament to his selflessness, sacrificing his own needs to serve others.

Even today, Mazz continues to serve as a seasoned veteran, a master teacher, and a friend to all, regardless of their station or rank. His extensive resume is a testament to his lifelong dedication to public service, filled with countless civic achievements that demonstrate his commitment to the betterment of his community.

The committee expressed their admiration and gratitude for Mazz’s profound impact, stating, "In terms of a metric to measure a man's worth, we believe Mazz has checked all the boxes and most assuredly has become the standard by which others should be judged, in overall service to his family, his Fire Department, and community."

Chief Gary "Mazz" Mazzacano Sr.'s legacy is one of exemplary service, unwavering dedication, and selfless sacrifice. The Columbia County Volunteer Firefighters Association is deeply honored to recognize his extraordinary contributions with the 2024 Lifetime Firefighter Achievement Award.
