North Hero, VT. — July 3 — After almost 40 years of volunteer work, lifelong firefighter Fred Mashtare passed away, leaving the North Hero Volunteer Fire Department in mourning. Mashtare was a volunteer firefighter with the Alburgh, South Hero, North Hero, and Grand Isle departments. He was still involved with Grand Isle when he passed away. In order to promote firefighter education throughout the area, he has also been a member of the North Country International Fire Training Service Board of Directors since 2009.

Mashtare, a third-generation firefighter, carried on a family service history that began in the early 1960s. His commitment and enduring services to the volunteer fire service were acknowledged by fire departments throughout Vermont.
