MASTIC, NY - On a recent Sunday morning, Mastic Fire Department held a vehicle extrication drill at the firehouse. Ex-Chief Rudy Sunderman, Jr. and Commissioner Mike Malone taught the department and probationary members how to handle a vehicle crash requiring extrication of trapped occupants. Members were given instructions on how to use the JAWS of Life, as well as other tools that may be needed for the process. After being given verbal instructions the members were given time to take a hands-on approach and had the opportunity to use the tools to perform some of the techniques learned on a car. Training is a valuable way to hone skills that are needed on an emergency scene such as a vehicle accident, fire or other emergency situation that may arise.
