This is a Fire Engineering book, soft cover measuring six inches by nine inches and has 215 pages. It is a sequel to a previous book he wrote named 35 Things Every Firefighter Should Know and Do. I met the author personally when he was the training officer with the Kearny, NJ Fire Department which is in the same county as the one I retired from. I have reviewed some of his books which were excellent and this one is no exception. This book of course addresses when the firefighter becomes an officer and assumes a supervisory position. There is a bonus chapter and a conclusion at the end of the book. In short it promotes doing the job as best as you can through self -discipline, knowledge, knowing ones strengths and limits, empathy, teamwork, constructive criticism, setting up expectations, delegation, dealing with change, trust, staying calm when the average person gets excited or otherwise loses control, inspiration, freelancing, accountability, report writing, risk taking, insubordination and many other subjects. In essence it is practical advice on how to do your job correctly while protecting the public and your team. It starts with you! One thing to emphasize is to never stop studying until you retire. Never stop learning about your target hazards for one. He states a number of words and phrases, some of which were new to me. Many may have been originally his own but nevertheless they get to the point. He acknowledges many learned persons who were inspirations to him in putting this book together. This is a book every officer and potential officer should have.
