A seasonal fire safety reminder about candle use during the winter holidays was released by the Philadelphia Fire Department on December 18. Fire officials urged families to discuss fire safety with kids and to think about adopting flameless, battery-operated candles as a ritual or decoration. Candles are responsible for over one-third of home décor fires, according to fire safety guidelines. Residents are urged to never leave candles unattended and to keep them at least 12 inches away from anything that could catch fire. The department pointed out that basic safety measures can help keep houses safer all season long and lower the danger of holiday-related fires.
