Orange, Mass. — October 17 — At approximately 8 p.m. Friday, the Orange Fire Rescue EMS Department was dispatched by Shelburne Control for a report of a basement filling with smoke. A first alarm was struck, bringing off-duty and call firefighters to assist, while Engine 2 and Ladder 1 responded with four personnel.

Firefighters arrived to the basement to find light smoke conditions, but they were initially unable to identify the source. Athol, Gardner, Greenfield, and Erving Fire Departments responded by providing mutual aid after a working fire was transmitted. Shortly after, crews canceled incoming aid, put out the small fire, and found an overheated sump pump.
