Massachusetts DEP Suspends Open Burning Permits Statewide Due to Elevated Air Pollution
February 18, 2026 — The Great Barrington Fire Department announced that the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has suspended open burning permits statewide for Wednesday, February 18, 2026, due to predicted elevated air pollution levels. In accordance with Massachusetts Air Pollution Regulations 310 CMR 7.07(3)(e) and 310 CMR 7.07(3)(g), local fire departments across all Massachusetts Fire and Incident Support Unit (ISU) Response Districts have been directed not to issue open burning permits for the day.
State officials reported elevated levels of fine particulate matter observed across Massachusetts this morning. Light winds, cloud cover, and a mix of rain, snow, and freezing rain are expected to keep particle concentrations elevated throughout much of the day. Authorities advised that any open burning under these conditions would contribute to worsening air quality.
Improved air quality is anticipated on Thursday once the weather system moves through the region. Residents seeking additional information are encouraged to contact the MassDEP Open Burning Hotline at 617-556-1021 or visit MassAir Online for updates.
