February 26, 2026 — The Barnstable Fire Department responded at 5:17 p.m. to a reported structure fire at 4275 Main Street (Route 6A) in Cummaquid after multiple 911 calls confirmed a working fire. A full department recall was initiated, with mutual aid assistance from the Hyannis Fire Department and the Yarmouth Fire Department. Car 3 (Captain, Group 4) arrived to find a 2½-story residential home with an active basement fire. Crews immediately launched an aggressive interior attack and conducted a primary search to confirm no occupants were inside. The home was unoccupied at the time of the incident, and no injuries were reported. Fire damage was contained to the basement, though smoke extended throughout the residence. A total of 21 firefighters operated on scene. The Sandwich Fire Department and West Barnstable Fire Department provided station coverage during the response. Route 6A was closed for approximately two hours to allow crews to work safely. The fire is believed to be accidental, with the official cause pending completion of the investigation. Officials noted the incident was first reported by a passerby who heard smoke alarms sounding inside the residence, underscoring the importance of maintaining working smoke detectors. The department also acknowledged assistance from the Barnstable Police Department, Barnstable County Sheriff's Office Communications Center, and Town of Barnstable Inspectional Services.
