Oceanside, N.Y. — October 21 —A reported building fire on Long Beach Road close to Waukena Avenue prompted the Oceanside Fire Department to respond on Saturday afternoon. First to arrive, 3rd Assistant Chief Sparberg sent out a Signal 10 for a working fire that was heavily involving a one-story taxpayer building. First to arrive were Tower Ladder 244 and Engine 246; they stretched lines and started a fire attack. A second alarm was requested because of the building's age, the fire conditions, and the addition of the cockloft. Additionally, crews discovered an extension into a nearby business and attempted to stop the spread.
Five hoselines were put into operation, and Tower Ladder 244 along with Long Beach Tower Ladder 2372 briefly used large-caliber streams to knock down the fire before interior crews re-entered to complete extinguishment. Two additional stores sustained smoke damage but did not experience fire extension. Mutual aid companies from the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 7th battalions assisted on scene and provided district coverage. All operations were under the command of Chief of Department Sean Costigan with Assistant Chiefs Lynch, Klein, and Sparberg. No injuries were reported.
