Oakland, NJ - A coordinated land and water response by approximately thirty-five Oakland firefighters brought a working fire inside a vacant multistory warehouse under control in forty minutes Saturday night, preventing the blaze from extending to adjacent commercial properties and residential housing developments in the Brooklyn Basin area.
Emergency dispatchers alerted fire crews just after 8:15 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, for a reported structure fire located on 5th Avenue near the Brooklyn Basin waterfront. First-arriving companies confirmed an active working fire within an unoccupied multistory commercial warehouse, initiating a single-alarm structural response.
While land companies advanced hose lines to contain interior and structural flames, the Oakland Fire Department deployed its municipal fireboat, based out of Station 2 in Jack London Square. Operating along the adjacent estuary waterway, the fireboat delivered critical master stream capability, enabling crews to combat the fire from the water side and establish a secure defensive barrier to protect exposed properties.
Through decisive positioning, firefighters brought the incident under control within forty minutes of dispatch, completely halting any flame spread toward neighboring businesses and high-density housing complexes. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported, and overhaul operations were conducted to extinguish remaining embers and verify structural stability.
