Dryden, NY - Working smoke detectors and fast action by a homeowner prevented structural damage Monday evening after malfunctioning heat tape ignited an electrical scare inside a residence at a local mobile home park.
Dryden firefighters from Neptune Hose Co. 1 and emergency medical personnel from Dryden Ambulance were dispatched at approximately 7:50 p.m. on Monday, October 5, 2026, for a reported trailer on fire. Under standard operational protocols for structural assignments, automatic mutual aid was immediately initiated from the Freeville, McLean, and Virgil fire departments.
Upon arrival, fire crews found that working smoke detectors had sounded inside the residence, alerting the occupants to the emergency. The homeowner promptly investigated the source, discovered that aged heat tape wrapping a water pipe had malfunctioned, and managed to unplug and de-energize the device before flames could spread.
Firefighters deployed thermal imaging equipment and conducted a thorough assessment beneath and around the dwelling to verify that no thermal extension had occurred within the subfloor, skirting, or structural framing.
With the hazard successfully isolated and no fire extension detected, incoming mutual aid companies were cancelled en route, and the scene was secured without injury or loss of property.
