Bellmore, NY - Members of the Bellmore Fire Department safely defused a hazardous materials emergency Friday afternoon by deploying specialized flare equipment to eliminate an active propane tank leak.

The department was dispatched during the afternoon hours of Friday, October 23, 2026, following emergency calls reporting an escaping gas hazard. Chiefs 600-01 and 600-02 arrived first on scene, establishing incident command, setting up an isolation perimeter, and confirming that a pressurized propane cylinder was actively releasing flammable vapors into the surrounding environment.

To neutralize the risk of an unconfined vapor cloud ignition or sudden rupture, the crew of Engine 601 put the department's specialized propane burn-off kit into service. The equipment allowed responders to tap into the compromised vessel and safely flare off the residual liquefied petroleum gas under controlled conditions, steadily burning the product down until the tank was fully emptied and depressurized.

Once the vapor hazard was completely mitigated and the cylinder was rendered inert, incident command contacted Nassau County Fire Marshal Unit 25HM to oversee the safe removal and formal disposal of the damaged tank. Fire officials commended the responding crews for their disciplined technical execution, which protected neighboring properties and swiftly eliminated the explosion hazard without injury.
