Perth Amboy, NJ - On October 25, 2025, at approximately 8:02 a.m., the Perth Amboy Fire Department (PAFD) was dispatched to a reported structure fire on the 300 block of Wagner Avenue. Upon arrival, fire crews discovered a fire involving the rear deck of a residence, with flames extending to the back of the home.
Before firefighters arrived, a passerby had alerted the occupants to the fire and used a garden hose to help contain the flames, preventing them from spreading to neighboring structures. Fire crews quickly deployed two hoselines to bring the fire under control and fully extinguish it while conducting searches of the residence. All occupants safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
During the investigation, damaged Lithium-Ion battery packs and batteries were located in the area of origin beneath the deck. Middlesex County Hazmat was requested to the scene to properly handle and remove the hazardous materials. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the PAFD Fire Investigation Unit.
Units responding to the scene included Engine 1, Engine 2, Truck 2, Rescue 1, Car 1, Car 3, and Car 5, along with Middlesex County Hazmat. Engine 3 provided city coverage during the incident.
The PAFD reminds residents to exercise caution when using and charging Lithium-Ion battery-powered devices:
Purchase only certified and tested Lithium-Ion products from nationally recognized testing laboratories.
Store and charge battery packs in safe, dry areas away from outdoor elements such as rain and extreme temperatures.
Never leave Lithium-Ion batteries unattended while charging, and disconnect them once fully charged.
Use only the chargers and battery packs provided with the device, as mismatched or “compatible” replacements can cause fires.
Ensure smoke alarms are properly installed and functioning in all homes.
